THE HOW TO LOSE A STONE IN ONE WEEK DIET

Like the exercise tab, the diet one has remained empty for a few months now, despite the fact that I am constantly thinking about weight and how to lose it....the problem is I never really do anything about it other than exercise like a mad woman. I just love my food too much.

According to one of my gym instructors the perfect body is 70% food and only 30% exercise - I know that you should eat three healthy meals a day and everything in moderation but that doesn't work with me because I love to gorge, booze and eat naughty things - sometimes many times throughout the day!

However it does get to the point sometimes (more often than I would like) when I have overdone it and need to shed a few pounds/kilos/stones. I am uncertain whether I should recommend this diet and it should probably come with a health warning as you are able to lose a lot of weight very quickly!

Pascal did a full week and lost 14 pounds in 7 days, one of my bff's has done it this week and lost 7 pounds in three days and I did a few days once and lost 5 pounds in 3 days. Crash dieting at it's best!!!

It is obviously not a long term answer and you are more than likely to gain some of the weight back but it is the perfect solution if you want to lose weight fast - I like to do it if I have a special event or holiday coming up and I want to look as thin as possible or if I am trying to shrink my appetite.

The best thing is it is not particularly difficult...as far as diets go...and I have done quite a few in my time - the south beach diet, the juice diet, the Dukan, Atkins, starvation, .....the list is endless. My best friend and I have been talking about our weight everyday for 20 years and we still aren't bored of the subject (although our other halves definitely are)! In fact writing this is actually making me hungry and want to eat kettle chips but NO!

Anyway James Duncan's diet was designed to help people crash lose a stone for operations in a week:

Their Rules

  1. No alcoholic drinks.
  2. Permitted drinks: Black coffee, tea, lemon/grapefruit juice without sugar.
  3. No milk, butter or fats.
  4. NO EATING BETWEEN MEALS.
  5. Abstain from all not included in diet. Eat what is shown or go without.
  6. ONLY DIET FOR ONE WEEK IN THREE - TWO WEEKS OFF.
  7. No substitutes allowed. The basis of the diet is chemical, not the quantities.
  8. Lunch and dinner may be swapped but only on the same day.
  9. GUARANTEED TO LOSE ONE STONE IN ONE WEEK.
  10. No salt as it makes you retain water, pepper is ok.

James's Tips

  1. The grapefruit sourness is a lot more bearable with pink grapefruit. Also, if you have a sweet tooth normally, bear in mind that grapefruit sweetens a lot in the last stages of ripening.
  2. I am used to eating like a pig, and thus had a lot of “empty stomach - must fill” type feelings. Drinking lots of water filled me up temporarily.
  3. If you are desperate for flavour on some of the blander dishes, add a little lemon juice. On the list of allowed drinks and can pep up things nicely.
NB: This is not my diet, I merely transcribe; do not sue me if you die - James. I second this!!

http://www.jaduncan.com/2006/04/how-i-lost-stone-in-week.html

Here are some pictures of my meals from the diet:

I have to say it starts off well with a breakfast of toast and tomatoes which is actually quite tasty & the diet is good in that you are eating proper meals each day which you need to cook & prepare (albeit they are a bit bland). I really went to town on the fresh fruit and had mango, melon, apple, cherries, grapes and berries. I was not so keen on the grapefruit but you get used to it and it is better than a slim fast shake!! You cannot cheat as it will ruin it - the whole diet is chemical as it says so you need to stick to it exactly.

Of course it is not a walk in the park but it is not impossible and you do get results fast. I sometimes just do the first two days as a little detox but in all honesty sticking to a diet for just 7 days isn't too horrendous. I didn't exercise like normal when doing this as I did not have the energy!!

Let me know how you get on if you do this - as I mentioned I love to chat weight - that and food are really my favourite topics of conversation & I can wax lyrical for hours!!

Right now - where are those kettle chips?!!!

NB. Since I posted this nearly six months ago I have had many questions regarding making changes to the diet and substitutions…..the answer is no! If you don't eat fish or lamb chops or something, the diet rules that you should leave the item out. However if you want to make a substitution, you obviously can (it is your choice after all) but the diet won't be as effective (you may not lose the full 14lbs). You are also not allowed fizzy drinks or sweeteners even if they are calorie free. If you are vegetarian, I would replace the meat for high protein items like quorn or eggs, I unfortunately don't know the average weight loss with this as I am not a vegetarian. I hope that helps!!!

  4. Started this diet today. This diet looks like it would be easier to do in the summer. Salad isn't exactly what you want in the winter :/

  5. I dont like grapefruit can I use an alternative

  6. I'm afraid not as it is a chemical diet. Pink grapefruits are sweeter and nicer, otherwise just leave it out. Good luck!!

  10. Hello, I am in a panic and desperately want to lose as much weight as possible quickly. Does it matter what weight you are to start with on this diet?

    Thank-you

    1. No - but as with all diets, you will lose weight quicker when you have more weight to lose. Good luck with it!

    2. does it matter if you leave some stuff out of this? as in you don't eat all of what is on the diet sheet as I don't like all of that stuff! :)

    3. Hi, to be honest for this diet to be fully effective you need to stick to it and not use substitutes. You can leave things out if you don't like them however you might then be very very hungry!! Good luck and merry Christmas x

    1. You won't - I drunk a lot of herbal tea when I did the diet which helped and also for the lunches I would eat a lot of fruit as you are allowed as much as you want. Good luck!

  12. Can you add any dressing to the salad ,like olive oil/ salt/black peper..Or it is only lemon juice.

    ReplyDelete
  13. No olive oil I am afraid as it is 116 calories per tablespoon! I'd suggest lemon juice, salt and pepper and a dash of balsamic vinegar. One think to think about though, is that salt makes you retain water which means less weight loss. Good luck!

  17. Hey I am on my 2nd week is this bad for u I have had a few treats along the way bout lost a stone! By working it all off witha treadmill!!! I am looking to do this for 4 weeks is this ok am dying to me slim for jan

    ReplyDelete
  18. Wow - that is impressive - well done you. The guidelines for this diet say you should only do this for one week out of every three. By doing this for 4 weeks your body will lack the vitamins and nutrients it needs. However it is obviously your choice and will depend on how you feel. Let me know how you get on and good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hi - I received a comment regarding whether it is ok to use lime juice instead of lemon - I think this is ok and you can use some fresh herbs too.

  22. hi i did this for a week n lost around 10 pounds. its not as hard as you might think you just need to stay out of the kitchen when its not mealtimes! although this is quite difficult when u have four young kids. it takes willpower though but it can be done. personally i feel that its quite a healthy diet. the only downside is that it excludes dairy and carbs. these are important.

  29. Can i leave the meat out as im a vegetarian?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Yes, I don't know what substitutes you can use but I presume if you can find something of similar calorie content as the meat you should be fine - or if you eat fish, have that instead. But be careful as oily fish such as salmon is higher calories than white fish like sea bass. Good luck!

  31. Hi, I am starting this tomorrow and although think this has been asked before how much chicken or steak etc can you have? Another site implied as much as you like as it is a chemical diet but that didnt make sense! I assume 1 piece of chicken or steak! Also apart from dressing can you have any salad items? Thanks for any advice :-)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hi - good luck with the diet tomorrow! It is a chemical diet so technically you can have as much steak / chicken as you like however when I did it, I stuck to just one piece (albeit a big one). With regards to salad items, I would suggest lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, celery, spring onions, peppers, etc. One thing I would avoid is sweetcorn as it is sugary. Anything with a hugh water content is perfect!! I hope the diet works well for you.

    ReplyDelete
  33. are you allowed to chew on chewing gum to subside the empty stomach feeling?

  39. Did 3/7 days last week and lost 7llb. Am doing it again this week Mon - Thurs. Can I swap the lamb on Wednesdays menu for steak or chicken again as I really didn't enjoy the lamb (and its pricey!) and I don't think I would survive with no meat!!! Also can I have poached eggs instead of boiled all the time or only on the specified days??
Actually loving this diet as not only do you look better, but once you get over the hunger I felt better too. (less sluggish and bloated)
    Thank You

    1. Congrats on the weight loss - that is brilliant. I am most jealous!! You are not meant to swap the meat around but to be honest I don't think it matters too much especially as you are doing 4 days. I think poached eggs are fine as well - (and I reckon definitely nicer)! Good luck with the rest of it!!

  40. I've started this today as I need to lose my last stone of baby weight... Am adding an extra two eggs per day as I am breastfeeding and also taking multi vitamin everyday, so ill see how I feel! At the end of the first day I don't feel different, so fingers crossed I can do it! X

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Congratulations on your baby! My only worry is that it might effect your milk supply as you are not consuming enough calories and you need your body to be at it's optimum for your baby. I think definitely adding some eggs and vitamins are a good idea and see how you go. Just remember you will feel weaker than normal because you are eating less which will be tough with a baby so take care of yourself and don't overdo it x

      Delete
    2. I'm doing this for the same reason Millie that last stone just won't move... Glad I've found this diet I think if we stick to it, it'll do the trick... Best of luck

      Delete
  41. Thanks Emma. I was pleasantly suprised myself when I stepped on the scales! I think it may also have something to do with no alcohol, pastry or chocolate for the three days too!! Poached eggs are much tastier then boiled eggs on the salad as the yolk makes a lovely cheeky dressing without cheating!

    ReplyDelete
  42. for those who don't like grapefruit are we able to just leave it out from the diet?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes - if you don't like something you are meant to just leave it out rather than substitute it. I am not a fan of grapefruits either but I ended up liking them on this diet , the pink ones are the sweetest. Good luck with the diet!

      Delete
  43. Can you substitute Lamb Chop with Steak? And also, i understand that I may feel and be lighter after 7 days, but are the results visible? Day one and hoping I can stick to it! x

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For the diet to be fully effective you are meant to stick to it exactly as it is chemical so I would recommend you have lamb rather than steak. You will definitely see visible results - my tummy shrunk after a couple of days and you can really tell the difference with your clothes. If you don't like lamb then have steak but for maximum weight loss follow the diet precisely. Good luck!

  44. Hello started this diet yesterday to shed last of post baby weight... On day 6 it says 1 glass grapefruit juice, but in the allowed beverages it advises grapefruit juice is allowed... I have been drinking the odd glass, should I be doing this ?
    Thanks Yvonne

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To be honest no! Grapefruit juice does contain calories so you are only meant to have it when it says so on day 6 - the rest of the time you should have water, black tea / coffee or herbal teas. I am sure the odd glass is not the end of the world but for optimal weight loss I would't recommend it. However if you are breastfeeding, you will need more calories as otherwise you wont be producing enough nutrients for your baby. Good luck and I hope it goes well - that last bit of baby weight is always the worst!!

  45. Hi emma can you have green chillie and mushroom also onions in this diet meal plan. Also I don't eat beef what if I only substituted the meals with only chicken x

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hi Hayley, I am afraid you are not allowed the chillies, mushrooms and onions really on this diet - other than maybe adding some spring onions to the salad. For the diet to work effectively you need to stick to it exactly. If you don't eat beef, then I reckon chicken is a good substitution, however it is a chemical diet so the rules say no substitutes allowed. Although the way I see it, you will still be eating better and much less calories than normal and chicken is healthier than beef so I would go for it...you can't starve...good luck!!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hi I cannot have grapefriut due to tablets I am taking. Is there an alternative I can have in its place ?
    thanks

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To be honest no, you are not meant to have substitutes and if you can't eat anything you are meant to just leave it out. However it is up to you. If you aren't being completely strict you could always have a fruit with a high water content instead, like watermelon for example. Good luck with it all!

Used tinned grapefruit in natural juice, dry fried the steak, oven cooked the chicked (always had two breast) and swapped the fish for chicken (cant eat fish/seafood), tinned carrots in water(again cant eat fresh) and swapped the eggs around on day 7! and had one chocolate eclair each night :-0! 1. Hi, I am sure it will work for you. Each day is about 700 calories so you will definitely lose weight. Most diets say about 1200 cals a day and if you are not trying to lose weight it is 2000 cals a day so you can see it is a big difference. Good luck and think positive and please let me know how you get on.

  69. Hi if you skip meals do you think you will loose as much weight because some people say if you don't eat meals it slows down your matabolism .

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To be honest - this one always confuses me. I think eat less calories and therefore lose more weight but then I have also been told if you starve yourself you slow down your metabolic rate and then when you do it, your body stores the food as fat. I would say that as this is such a low calorie diet it is not worth skipping meals and you should stick with what it says. How is it going? Good luck and merry Christmas xx

  71. I just finished this diet yesterday. I followed it religiously except that I used spices and lemon juice to marinate the chicken, fish and lamb. I weighed 82 kgs (181pounds )at the start. I weighed myself this morning after finishing the diet and weighed 77.8 kgs (171 pounds), a total loss of 10 pounds which I am absolutely delighted with. I should also mention that despite only consuming approximately 700 calories a day on this diet, I was also burning around 700-800 calories in the gym each day, so in an overall calorie deficit each day. I think it would be very hard to lose 14 pounds on this diet unless you are seriously overweight but it is great to kick start a weight loss.

  72. Congratulations on the weight loss - that is brilliant. You did amazingly and I am very impressed you managed to exercise at the same time. My fiancé did manage the 14 lbs but I think that could be because he needed too plus he eats so much normally, the diet was a real shock for his body!! I need to get him back on it after Christmas!! Anyway well done once again. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!!

  73. I cannot wait to do this come Monday. I seriously need it after Christmas and troubles I've had this year. I hope, if ok with everyone, to use this as a bit of therapy and to get advice but to also just let you know how it's going each step of the way. Thank you and merry Christmas xx

    1. Hi Nicola, I have looked online about this diet and other people have suggested replacing the meat with quern or fish (if you eat that). Alternatively I have just posted a veggie diet I found online. I don't think it is such a quick weight loss but it does sound more exciting!! http://thislittlepiggylovesfood.blogspot.com/2013/12/a-veggie-diet.html

Good luck and let me know how you get on!

  76. Hey emma really want to give this diet a go. Can you take slimming pills and vitamins with this diet? And can I drink fruit flavoured tea?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi - yes definitely to fruit flavoured teas as long as you don't add milk. To be honest I don't know about vitamins and slimming pills. I would say you don't need them as you are getting plenty of vitamins from the food and if you follow it correctly you will lose a lot of weight so won't need any pills….but of course it is totally up to you. Good luck & let me know how you get on!

    2. Thanks emma. Can I use flavoured water? And can I use tinned tuna?

      Delete
    3. Hi, as long as the tuna isn't in oil that should be fine and as for flavoured water you are not meant to drink it so it is up to you. Good luck!

      Delete
  77. Can I replace the meat with egg?

    ReplyDelete
  78. You aren't meant to make any substitutions as it is a chemical diet however if you don't eat meat you can definitely give it a go. Good luck!

  79. Hi, Just wondering, i don't like herbal tea or coffee. And i only like water if its orange squash. The one i have has no added sugar and minimal calories. Is this alright to drink as its pretty much the only thing i drink.

    Many thanks

    1. To be honest you are probably not meant to and instead should just have water. However I would probably drink it as it is just too boring otherwise!! Good luck!! x

    Replies
    1. Hi,
Happy New Year! Relationships are known to make you put on weight - it is exactly the same as me! I don't think you would lose 2 stone by this for two consecutive weeks as your weight loss won't be as quick in the second week - plus they don't recommend doing the diet for two consecutive weeks. I would suggest doing it for a week and see how you get on. Then eat healthily for a couple of weeks and then do it again. Good luck and let me know how you get on x

    1. Hi Chloe,
Happy New Year! You are meant to stick to the exact diet as it is chemical however if you don't eat steak, I expect chicken is a good substitution.
      Good luck! x

  91. Hi emma,

just starting this diet today i did the aloe vera detox before christmas and found it great but i just want to get back on track and into healthy eating again so i came across this diet online I just have a few questions for you if thats ok. so day one for dinner its 2 boiled eggs salad and grapefruit, for the salad what does it inlcude could u use sundried tomatoes are you aloud roasted peppers ? for things like grilled chicken can you use herb rub i alwasys use the ballymaloe herb rub on chicken but was wondering would it be ok to use on this diet ? also are you meant to drink lots of grapefruit throughout the day or not drink it at all i was unsure of this so i didnt have any yet .

    Thanks x

    ReplyDelete
  92. Hi, thanks for your email - always happy to help. Unfortunately no sun dried tomatoes as they are normally in oil. If you roast your own peppers with nothing else that should be ok. When I did the diet I just used lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, spring onions & celery. I read that you can't even use sweetcorn as there is too much sugar. The more water based the salad the better! Unfortunately I do not know the ballymaloe herb rub - if it is like just fresh herbs and only a little that should be ok - but there should not be any butter / oil involved. With regards to drinking water, herbal tea and black coffee is best. If you want the diet to have the maximum effect I would stick to the rules exactly and have no substitutes. Good luck, I wish you all the best xx

    3. No yoghurt I am afraid - the fruit needs to be plain. With salad, I think beetroot and sugar snap peas should be fine but the more water based salad the better - such as lettuce, cucumber, celery, spring onions, tomatoes etc. No sweetcorn though! Good luck!!!

This weight is really making me so so depressed. But I'm determined to do it this time. Also this site seems to give great encouragement so I can see that this time I just might do it. But can someone tell me what flavoured teas are the best? Thanks so very much

    1. I love the pukka teas - such as cleanse, refresh, love and lemon and ginger. Green tea is also good as it helps improve your metabolic rate and peppermint is an old favourite. There are plenty to choose from! Good luck!

  98. Hi Alan,

I'd say you might not have the energy for cycling. On one of the sites, it says you should not exercise. But I suppose it is all down to you and how you feel. Anyway Alan, good luck with this diet and happy new year to you too.

  102. Hi everyone!

Started this diet on Sunday so on 2nd day today. I desperately need to lose weight for my wedding on 22nd March and am better dieting with a strict structure. I'm 5'3 and 12st 9lb. I'm planning to do this for 6 and a half days to start as it's my daughter's birthday on Saturday so of course there'll be cake - lol! Good luck everyone a week is nothing in the great scheme of things especially as it's a kick start. I hope I can lose 10 lbs by Saturday so I'm in the 11s!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi, I would concentrate on the diet rather than exercise. If you feel energetic by all means follow your usual exercise plan but personally I just did day to day walking. It all depends on how you feel….don't over exercise and then gorge on food…good luck!

  105. Hello all,

I'm so disappointed with myself. Wanted to start today but didn't. I hope I will be motivated to do it tomorrow. I hope everyone who started is doing well. We're lucky to have Emma to motivate and give advice and offer assistance. Emma I ate cereal and yogurt today and some christmas cake which gave me heartburn. What do I do now? I don't suppose I can start, right?

  107. On Day 5 how much fish can you have and can you have different varieties of fish?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes you can choose what fish you have, just make it as fresh - I had a big piece of cod as I felt a white fish like that or sea bass or haddock was the least calories however it is up to you. I would just stick to the one type though and have a big portion. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi, I am afraid I don't know as I have never tried it - I only know this diet. It would be boring but I expect you would still lose a lot of weight as you are only eating about 700 cals a day. If you are a vegetarian, I do have another diet on here for vegetarians. Otherwise you could use quorn. Good luck!!

  110. Hiya this might be a silly question but does everything have to be grilled? And for grilled chicken would the packets work? Please reply ASAP

    ReplyDelete
  111. Hi - yes it is best that you grill or oven cook everything - you can't fry as you can't use any oil. As for the packets, I don't know what you mean I'm afraid. When I cooked it, I placed the chicken in foil and put some lemon juice, pepper and a few dried herbs on top….it wasn't bad!!
